Covid-19 livelihood relief to Bwindi and Mgahinga national park tour guides and reformed poachers

Updated: Jul 18, 2020

Mgahinga Community Development Organization (MCDO has conducted phase two of Covid-19 relief delivery in the Kisoro and Mgahinga communities. We have provided relief food items to additional vulnerable families, including those of tour guides. The tour guides, who typically lead trips to trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi and Mgahinga gorilla parks, are some of the worst-hit groups due to the closure of tourism businesses.

MCDO has started conducting needs assessments in the community to determine potential COVID recovery projects that can be supported with the donated funds. We have so far selected one livelihood project to assist. The project is Mgahinga Reformed Poachers Group, an association of 34 community members, who are reformed poachers from Mgahinga.

The association will use the donation to start an incoming generating project of growing onions. The project will raise income for the 34 families and contribute to the conservation of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park by assisting the Uganda Wildlife Authority in gorilla monitoring since the reformed poachers understand the forest very well.

We still have several families that need support. Please consider donating to the MCDO COVID-19 fundraiser on GoFundMe.
