On March 3rd, 2020, the Uganda National World Wildlife Day celebration was held in Kisoro Municipality Saza Grounds, Kisoro District. The theme of the event was “Sustainable Wildlife for the benefit of present and Future Generations.”
Mgahinga Community Development Organisation (MCDO), as one of the conservation practitioners, had an opportunity to participate in the event. Through the Uganda Community Tourism Association (UCOTA), MCDO represented community-based tourism projects. In attendance were the Mutanda Women group and some of the Mgahinga handcraft members. Also,
MCDO presented some projects, activities, and services, which include its conservation interventions.
The annual World Wildlife Day (WWD) is an opportunity to celebrate the many beautiful and varied forms of wild fauna and flora and to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits that their conservation provides to people. At the same time, the WWD reminds us of the urgent need to step up the fight against wildlife crime and human-induced reduction of species, which have wide-ranging economic, environmental, and social impacts. Given these various adverse effects, Sustainable Development Goal 15 focuses on halting biodiversity loss.
