Update on the ongoing Global Environment Facility (GEF) Extended Constituency Workshop for East Africa in Madagscar
Antananarivo, Madagascar - Represented by our Program Officer, Godfrey Habumuremyi, Mgahinga Community Development Organization (MCDO) has participated in the 2016 Extended Constituency Workshop (ECW) that has brought over 12 countries from GEF - East Africa Constituency to discuss modalities geared towards environment conservation.
The ECW workshop brings together GEF focal points, national focal points from the main international environmental conventions (biodiversity, desertification, climate change, and persistent organic pollutants), representatives from the civil society, GEF Agencies, and the GEF Secretariat. These workshops are an opportunity for participants to meet with their counterparts from other regional countries and other GEF partners, to discuss and review policies and procedures, and to share lessons and experiences from development and implementation of GEF projects and their integration within national policy frameworks.
Through the ECWs, there is Capacity building to enhance the participation of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in collaboration with GEF agencies and governments to have an impact on the drivers of climate change and land degradation.
During the day three discussions, participants reviewed the Paris Climate Agreement and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which are the core aspects in conserving our planet. However, it is also critical to appreciate the integrated participatory approaches where communities, Civil Society Organizations, governments and GEF agencies have interlinked roles to play to realize the impact on drivers of climate change, land and environmental degradation. Therefore, multi-stakeholder involvement is a key to the successful achievement of the environmental conservation strategies.
Still the focal areas of biodiversity, climate change, chemicals and waste, land degradation, international waters and sustainable management of forests remain the focus of GEF stakeholders to register long lasting environmental impact.
