Bee keeping in Mgahinga community

Mgahinga Community Development has supported implementation of a bee keeping project which started with 50 beehives. The members formed Sabyinyo Sustainable Farming Initiative (SSFI) with composition of 15 (7 males and 8 females) members. The overall aim is to promote sustainable agriculture and environment conservation hence contributing to improvement on community health and poverty reduction. The group has started with bee keeping and through our agricultural training to promote farming as a business for alternative livelihoods other than encroachment on protected areas and competing with the endangered mountain gorillas; MCDO believes in empowering communities to transform their livelihoods.
The honey production will contribute to income generation to community members around Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. SSFI wishes the number to increase as the rest realize the production benefits from the bee keeping project. The honey produced is marketed to the nearby town of Kisoro for value addition.
