Community Livestock Veterinary Support (CLVS) Project
Since 2009, Mgahinga Community Development Organization (MCDO) has been working with the Kisoro District Local Government, Andorran Government and Wildlife Diseases Research Group (Sefas) from the Autonomous University of Barcelona to provide veterinary support to communities around Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The main objective of this collaborative project is to support livelihoods of communities living close to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park through providing free treatment and vaccination to domestic animals. At least once every year, a team of veterinarians led by Dr. Jesus Muro and Dr. Ignasi Marco work with the team from Kisoro District Veterinary Office and MCDO to carry out different activities under this project. The focus is mainly on vaccinating dogs against rabies, deworming livestock (cows, goats and sheep) so any possible spread of disease among community livestock. The project is being implemented in Muramba and Nyarusiza sub-counties.
