On the right is the car that takes patients to nearby hopsitals in Kisoro, Uganda
MCDO runs a local ambulance (pick-up vehicle) that takes sick community members from the Mgahinga area to the nearby health centres, about 12 kilometers away. Our vehicle is a simple pickup truck but it has helped so many people in need of urgent care to reach the hospital on time.
Traditionally, community members used to take sick relatives on stretchers but in most cases, because of long distances, some patients could not make it to the hospital on time given the long walking distance or even their condition could worsen before reaching the hospital. So MCDO addressed the need of transportation by buying a vehicle as away for people to have a means of transporting their relatives to the hospital. We provide this service for free. However, families that can afford to contribute a fee are required to cover fuel costs. We serve at least 50 patients per year.
